Summary This Food Service Worker position is located within the Nutrition & Food Service at the VA Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota. Food Service Workers in the Nutrition and Food Services Department provides support services in preparing foods, tray delivery and related duties to serve the Veterans. Responsibilities The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive through 9/21/24. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Sets up and breaks down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items; Portions food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and specified dishware Selects and places correct items on patient trays Decides what food items to serve for the most common diets Identifies obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items designated by the menu Sets up dining room tables for service, place food and beverages on tables, and replenish items as necessary; Delivers meal trays to the patients' bedsides; reporting the patients' comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian; Provides assistance to cooks in the food preparation area, such as weigh, measure and assemble ingredients according to standardized recipes; Prepares fresh fruit/cold salads/dressings/sandwich fillings and cold sandwiches and simple cold desserts; Reads and interprets regular or modified menus, individual diet cards, tray tickets or patient selections Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas; Performing other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Varies Sunday through Saturday, to include rotating holidays and weekends. Schedule determined upon hire. Typical hours of 6:00 am-2:30 pm, 6:30 am-3:00 pm, 6:45 am-3:15 pm, 11:00 am-7:30 pm or as needed per scheduling. Night Shift Differential: Food Service Workers are entitled to pay at his or her basic hourly rate plus a differential of seven and one-half percent of his for regularly scheduled non-overtime work when a majority of his/her work hours occur between 3:00pm and 12:00am (midnight); or 10 percent of his or her scheduled rate if the majority of his or her work hours occur between 11:00pm and 8:00am. Additional Weekend Premium: Food Service Workers who perform service on a tour of duty, any part of which is between midnight Friday and midnight Sunday, will receive premium pay in the amount of 25% of the employees basic hourly rate for each hour of service on such tour. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Education Additional Information Pursuant to VHA Directive 1193.01, VHA health care personnel (HCP) are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 subject to such accommodations as required by law (i.e., medical, religious or pregnancy).
