POSITION PURPOSE
The Public School District Carpenter is responsible for constructing, repairing, and maintaining various structures and fixtures within the school district. This includes working on buildings, furniture, classroom equipment, and other structures. The carpenter ensures that all work is completed to a high standard, complies with safety regulations, and supports the overall maintenance and functionality of the school facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Construction
    Priority: Essential Percent of time: 35%
    • Construct or build new structures, walls, and fixtures across all buildings. These products are commonly made from wood, plywood, engineered products, and wallboard.
    • Install or build cabinets, casework, shelves, desks, television mounts, instructional boards, screens, and other furniture.
    • Install doors, small window projects, and flooring.
  2. Maintenance
    Priority: Essential Percent of time: 35%
    • Perform routine preventative maintenance service requests to prolong the life of school district facilities and equipment to ensure safety and function.
    • Inspect and identify areas requiring repair or replacement.
    • Perform general service request repairs each day as assigned.
  3. Safety and Compliance
    Priority: Essential Percent of time: 10%
    • Follow all safety regulations and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
    • Ensure all work complies with local building codes, Americans with Disability Act, and school district policies.
    • Report any safety hazards or maintenance issues to the appropriate personnel.
  4. Collaboration and Communication
    Priority: Essential Percent of time: 10%
    • Work closely with school administrators, teachers, and maintenance staff to prioritize and complete work orders.
    • Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors to ensure project timelines and expectations are met.
    • Assist in planning and estimating materials and labor required for various projects.
  5. Tools and Equipment
    Priority: Essential Percent of time: 10%
    • Ensure tools and equipment are in good working condition.
    • Keep a clean and organized workspace.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures
  • Ability to squat, stand, stoop, kneel, walk, and perform physical labor for extended periods
  • Capable of reaching above the head and reaching forward
  • Must frequently use hand and finger dexterity to grasp tools and climb ladders
  • May require working at elevated heights or within confined spaces
  • May work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, sprays, degreasers, and non-household dust
  • Frequently lifting and/or moving up to 90 pounds
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation
  • Proven experience as a carpenter, ideally within an educational, commercial, or institutional setting
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications
  • Minimum of four years of finish carpentry or millwork experience
  • Knowledge of building codes, Americans with Disability Act, safety regulations, and best practices in carpentry
  • Strong computer skills
  • Certification or Associate Degree in General Carpentry

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
  • Capable of passing a district written and physical test
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community
  • Potential to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies

LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Capacity to write routine reports and correspondence

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • o Ability to calculate figures and amounts
  • o Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
EVALUATION
  • Job performance is evaluated on an annual basis by the Plant and Electrical Manager

This role requires frequent interaction with a broad spectrum of internal and external stakeholders, including students, faculty, administrative staff, maintenance teams, vendors, and regulatory agencies. Effective communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving are vital to successfully navigate these interactions.

Problem Solving
The Carpenter encounters a diverse array of problem-solving scenarios that demand quick, strategic, and effective solutions. Challenges include resolving space issues, addressing unexpected maintenance emergencies, mounting or re-mounting equipment across all kinds of systems in the buildings, balancing quality control with budgetary constraints. Failure to adequately resolve maintenance issues can result in compromised safety for students and staff, increased operational costs, and potential regulatory non-compliance.

Autonomy is a significant component of this role, with the incumbent expected to make day-to-day operational decisions that align with district policies and strategic objectives. This includes prioritizing service request tasks and immediate problem-solving when necessary. Decisions requiring significant financial expenditure, policy deviations, or strategic shifts are escalated to the Plant and Electrical Manager or relevant administrative authority. The incumbent is encouraged to innovate within the scope of their responsibilities to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
