About the position

As a Drill/Bore Operator and Locator with our Underground Infrastructure team, you will be responsible for the installation of electrical and communications underground infrastructure throughout North Dakota, South Dakota, and Western Minnesota. You will have responsibility for operating drilling equipment and locating underground utilities to facilitate the installation of underground pipes, conduits, and utility lines. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring accurate and efficient installations. This position requires a strong understanding of drilling equipment, knowledge of utility locating methods, and the ability to work effectively in a team.


Day in the life

  • Operate horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment to bore underground pathways for the installation of pipelines, conduits, and utility lines.
  • Conduct pre-job inspections of drilling equipment and ensure proper setup and calibration.
  • Review project plans, blueprints, and specifications to determine the drilling path and required depths.
  • Use specialized locating equipment to identify the location of existing underground utilities, ensuring their avoidance during the drilling process.
  • Collaborate with project managers, surveyors, and utility companies to obtain accurate utility maps and locate underground facilities.
  • Operate electronic locating devices, such as ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic locators, to mark the positions of utilities.
  • Maintain accurate records of drilling activities, including distances drilled, depths reached, and utility locations.
  • Monitor drilling operations to ensure adherence to safety guidelines, proper alignment, and correct drilling techniques.
  • Troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance on drilling equipment, ensuring their optimal performance and minimizing downtime.
  • Coordinate with crew members to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of projects.
  • Comply with all safety regulations and protocols, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and report any unsafe conditions or incidents to the supervisor.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other stakeholders to report progress, challenges, and suggestions for process improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of experience with directional drilling rigs
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs
  • Ability to work as a team with a positive attitude and good work ethic.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean motor vehicle record.
  • A Class A CDL license is a plus.
  • Must be able to obtain a DOT medical card.
  • Must be able to travel in the North Dakota, South Dakota, and Western Minnesota areas with occasional overnight stay as necessary.
