Job Description

Responsibility #1: Clean restrooms/locker rooms so that they are maintained in a sanitary, hygienic condition.

  • Empty and clean trash cans and sanitary receptacles, replacing bags as needed.


  • Clean and disinfect sinks, mirrors, paper and soap dispensers, urinals and toilets.


  • Refill toilet paper, paper towel and soap dispensers as needed.


  • Spot clean ceilings, walls, light switches, handles, doorknobs and partitions.


  • Sweep, scrub or mop and disinfect floors.
  • Pressure wash weekly.


  • Monitor floor drains daily, adding water as needed to prevent sewer gas.


Responsibility #2: Clean offices, classrooms, hallways, office corridors, stairways, entrances, and public lounges.

  • Empty and clean trash cans, replacing bags as needed.


  • Vacuum, sweep, scrub or mop floors.


  • Spot clean carpets daily.


  • Dust and spot clean tabletops, desktops, countertops, windowsills, radiator tops, etc. Clean whiteboards and blackboards. Spot clean walls paying special attention to areas around trash cans. Spot clean interior windows. Clean doors and doorframes.


  • Dust, sweep and mop stairways.


  • Clean and disinfect water fountains.


  • Remove trash on grounds surrounding building exterior, special attention paid to entry ways and area around dumpsters.


Responsibility #3: Monitor equipment, light fixtures and general building conditions to ensure all are in safe working order.

  • Check equipment daily. Determine if maintenance is needed. Repair if necessary and able.
  • Enter notes in Preventative Maintenance System - SharePoint/FMX. Inform supervisors of actions.
  • Work with supervisor to determine needed parts and their part numbers.
  • Check FMX daily. Complete tasks as assigned. Make notes as applicable and resolve tasks.
  • Replace light bulbs as needed.
  • Create work orders for issues needing others' attention or equipment repairs.


Responsibility #4: Perform restorative tasks throughout the year so that areas are maintained in a safe and clean fashion.

  • Extract carpets.


  • Scrub/strip refinish floors.


  • Clean light fixtures, vents, desktops.


  • Clean walls and windows.
  • Ensure that recyclables are maintained in an orderly fashion, empty as directed.


Responsibility #5: Adhere to all safety regulations defined by the City, Federal, State and University codes.

  • Maintain secularity as needed.


  • Maintain safety and environmental rules and regulations.


  • Read and understand Safety Data Sheets.


  • Complete yearly safety training as assigned.


Responsibility #6: Perform other related GMW duties when needed.

  • Check email, EMS, and work orders on a daily basis.


  • Manage inventory and supplies at a consistent level. Order supplies as needed /weekly using SharePoint.


  • Clean, shovel and de-ice all building entries in work areas as needed or directed. Record work performed on Entrance log each time work is done. Logs turned in to supervisor annually.


  • Assist with special tasks as assigned, including the movement of furniture, delivery of supplies & equipment and setups and teardowns for campus activities.


  • Assist in covering other areas as determined through crossover assignments or as assigned by supervisors.


  • Understand job functions and how the position relates to achieving department and institution goals.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Human relationship skills to interact with daily contact with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Perform assigned tasks with limited work direction.
  • Ability to be on a ladder periodically to do cleaning or change light bulbs.
  • Able to read and comprehend Material Data Safety Sheets and be able to follow safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of all cleaning materials.
  • Ability to determine appropriate cleaning products and use them effectively.
  • Be in good physical health, able to lift or move 50 lbs., do repetitive bending, twisting, kneeling, reaching overhead, move furniture, stand for long periods of time, work in enclosed areas, be able to go up and down stairs, and to work in buildings after the ventilation system is shut off.
  • Must be able to operate equipment in a manner consistent with manufacturer's instructions.Equipment includes (but is not limited to) vacuums, kai vacs, floor scrubbers, sweepers, and carpet extractors.
  • Basic computer skills to do timesheets, trainings, work orders, and check emails.

Preferred Qualification
  • Experience working in residential or academic setting.
  • Experience with cleaning chemicals and equipment.


Other Requirements

This position is ESSENTIAL as determined by management of MSUM during weather and other emergency periods as declared by the Commissioner of Employee Relations of the University President.
