The department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at North Dakota State University is recognized internationally for its excellence in research and education in coatings science and technology and related soft matter topics. The department currently offers MS and PhD degrees as well as a minor at the undergraduate level. The department is seeking applications for outstanding individuals to fill a tenure-track faculty position starting Fall 2026. While the position is at the assistant professor level, candidates with exceptional qualifications may be considered for appointment at a higher rank. Candidates will be expected to establish an internationally recognized research program and be an effective instructor in the field of coatings technology at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Hiring Range:

$75,000+

Pay is based on several factors, including budget, labor market, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and/or certification and other business considerations.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates for the position must have a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, polymer science, coatings science or related field, a demonstrated track record of experimental research accomplishments in a field related to the research interests of the department, and effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates are preferred to have research expertise in one or more of the following areas: Polymer or material synthesis, protective coating systems, biobased and sustainable materials, material characterization, coatings rheology, smart materials, combinatorial and high throughput methods, and/or color science. Past teaching and/or mentorship experience. In addition, candidates with previous national laboratory or industry experience are especially encouraged to apply.
