SUMMARY Seeking an HVAC/Plumbing/Electrical Chief Maintenance Mechanic in the Facilities Operations Division of the General Services Department. This position will be responsible for managing maintenance, repairs, and planned projects across multiple trades and cultural venues. These cultural venues include, but are not limited to, the Mint Museum Uptown, Knight Theater, and the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. This position will also serve as the Cultural Team's on-call Chief Maintenance Mechanic for after-hours and holiday emergencies.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage schedules and budgets for various preventive maintenance, repair, and capital replacement services for City facilities and assets related to HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and site work.
- Be available 24/7/365 (all weekends and holidays) for emergency repair needs across all cultural facilities.
- Review, update, and complete Work Orders using the Cityworks intake system.
- Liaise with cultural facilities staff to plan upcoming maintenance and inspections, and to communicate the progress of various repairs.
- Interface with vendors to coordinate repairs.
- Attend bi-monthly Facilities Operations staff meetings.
- Represent Facilities Operations as a subject matter expert in various meetings with City and community stakeholders.
- Process P-Card transactions in Workday while ensuring compliance with the Procurement Card Policy.
- Navigate invoice discrepancies with finance staff.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of the construction and maintenance of commercial and governmental facilities.
- At least six (6) years of experience working out of HVAC/plumbing/electrical trucks and/or equivalent on a facility maintenance crew.
- Ability to exercise independent thinking and judgement.
- Ability to read blueprints and detailed system diagrams.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written with the ability to work well with others.
- Excellent organization and time management skills.
- Build appropriate rapport and constructive, effective relationships with all stakeholders.
- Use diplomacy and tact to diffuse conflicts.
- Possess good problem-solving skills using logic and reasoning based on critical thinking with the ability to make decisions on a timely basis.
- Ability to identify effective approaches for choosing a course of action and/or developing appropriate solutions within a team atmosphere.
- Preferred proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite products (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in HVAC/Plumbing/Electrical systems, operations, and/or maintenance industry with a minimum of three (3) years supervisory work experience. Experience working with government facilities and assets is a plus.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma with three (3) years of relevant work experience, or an Associate's Degree and one (1) year of experience or the equivalent combination of background, experience, and skills necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Requires one or a combination of the following:
- NC State HVAC Contractors License
- Universal Certification for Refrigeration Handling
- Unlimited Electrical License
- Plumbing Class 1 License
- NC General Contractors License
- Other trade licenses may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The City's Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
