Description
Be a part of a collaborative team that works to create safer and efficient shared roadways. The Public Works Transportation Planning division is seeking a intern who have a strong interest in transportation engineering with experience using small tools (including a hammer and power drill) and enjoy working outdoors to be a part of their team. This position will be supporting the Transportation Data Collection team in performing crash data analysis, vehicle, bike, and pedestrian count data collection, and ArcGIS mapping.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility located at 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN 55340, and remote as job duties require. The Public Works Facility in Medina is not accessible by public transportation. This position will start in May 2026 and last until August or up to 13 weeks with flexible start and end dates. Interns are scheduled to work 40 hours per week Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. with some flexibility on work schedules. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must relocate or reside in Minnesota or Wisconsin.

In this position, you will;
- Deploy portable counting equipment along Hennepin County roadways to collect pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle data.
- Follow best practices in safety whenever working on the roadway.
- Perform data and video analysis to develop metrics and reports.
- Upload new count data to the county's online Multimodal Counts Map using ArcGIS.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance.
Need to have: - Current enrollment or a recent graduate (within 6 months), in a vocational/technical or a bachelor's degree program in construction, engineering, land surveying/highway engineering technology, civil engineering, geography, GIS, urban planning/studies or another related field.
- A valid driver's license.
- Reliable internet connection and self-support hybrid office space or ability to travel to a Hennepin County collaborative workspace.
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain; bend and stoop, and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.
Nice to have: - Experience with:
- Troubleshooting basic computer issues.
- Using small tools (including a hammer and power drill).
- Microsoft Office/Google Product, Microsoft Visual Basics, Access, ArcGIS, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Creative Suite, Microstation/AutoCAD, and Synchro/SimTraffic.
- Knowledge of math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
- Ability to communicate with staff at all levels of the organization, in person, and via email and phone.
