Job Description
Summary: The Food Pantry Assistant handles multiple food pantry duties at multiple locations (when needed) as outlined under the job responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with customers and volunteers during all pantry food distribution hours
- Follow & teach staff and volunteers safety training and guidelines to maintain Forklift and Pallet Jack safety.
- Unload weekly deliveries Daily Bread, Great Plains Food Bank and all other deliveries
- Separate Inventory according to like product items
- Complete Inventory control
- Use Computer software and document all processes appropriately each shift
- Sort and stock food items, focusing on the freezer, cooler, bread and pastry areas with the objective of using the freshest products when possible
- Review food supplies on the shelves and backfill according to inventory schedule
- Daily sorting, stocking, and cleaning ensuring compliance with policies and procedures
- Maintain current licensing and follow all food safety requirements
- Ensure safety of staff and volunteers and community members by making sure that safety practices are being followed and maintained.
- Complete any light exterior yard work, routine upkeep of exterior areas and parking lot as needed.
- Clean building by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming all areas.
- Remove garbage around exterior of building and prepare bins for pickup.
- Handle emergency upkeep requests, contact maintenance when necessary.
- Follow procedures for use of cleaning chemicals and power equipment, to prevent damage and injury.
- Open, prepare, close and secure the pantry as appropriate with current assigned shifts.
- Other duties as requested or needed.
Additional Skills:
- Forklift and Pallet Jack experience preferred
- Janitorial/Custodian experience preferred
- High School diploma/GED required
- Ability to work under minimal supervision
- Capacity to take direction
- Strong attention to detail
- Physically capable of lifting and moving up to 30 pounds as necessary
Successful candidates
- Excellent customer service, communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to individual struggles with homelessness, poverty, substance abuse, mental illness, and criminal records.
- Knowledge of harm reduction, strength-based, and behavior-based models.
- Preferred- applicable experience preferably in social service setting with people in crisis.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
