DESCRIPTION

The Civil Engineer in Training (EIT) supports the structural engineering team in the design, analysis, detailing coordination, and execution of structural steel projects. This role provides hands-on experience in steel design, connection development, fabrication coordination, and construction support while working under the supervision of Licensed Structural Engineers. The EIT will contribute to safe, cost-effective, and code-compliant structural solutions for projects.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Structural Design & Analysis
• Assist in the analysis and design of structural steel members and systems in accordance with applicable building codes and standards.
• Perform structural calculations for beams, columns, bracing, connections, base plates, and anchorage systems.
• Prepare calculation packages and support documentation for review by licensed engineers.
• Support delegated design engineering for steel connections and miscellaneous metals.

• Project Coordination
• Collaborate with project managers, detailers, fabricators, and erectors to ensure design intent is maintained through fabrication and installation.
• Review shop drawings and erection drawings for compliance with contract documents.
• Respond to RFIs (Requests for Information) and assist with field-related engineering questions.
• Coordinate with architects, general contractors, and other engineering disciplines.

• Drafting & Software Support
• Assist in developing structural models and drawings using software such as AutoCAD or other BIM platforms.
• Utilize structural analysis software to model and analyze structural systems.
• Support BIM coordination and clash detection efforts.

• Field & Fabrication Support
• Conduct occasional site visits to observe erection progress and verify field conditions.
• Support troubleshooting of fabrication or fit-up issues.
• Assist in reviewing non-conformance reports and developing engineering solutions.

• Quality & Compliance
• Ensure designs comply with company standards, safety policies, and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in internal design reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain organized project documentation and calculation archives.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution.
• Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or actively pursuing EIT licensure.
• Fundamental knowledge of structural steel design principles.
• Understanding of building codes and industry standards (AISC, ASCE, IBC).
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Internship or co-op experience in structural engineering or steel fabrication.
• Experience with structural analysis software.
• Familiarity with BIM tools.
• Exposure to connection design and steel detailing practices.
• Basic understanding of welding, bolting, and fabrication processes.
